Carmel-by-the-Sea -known as a storybook
village. It was first founded as a artist colony
and has been an inspiration to many - such as
Robinson Jeffers, Robert Louis Stevenson, Ansel
Adams, Jack London and George Sterling, just to
mention a few. A town of just one mile square
specializes in Art galleries, fine dining, white
sandy beaches and an occasional celebrity. There
are no neon signs, very few three-story buildings
or fast food restaurants in Carmel. It is home to
gardens, Comstock buildings and a strong
appreciation for all the "Arts". In 1771, Father
Junipero Serra founded the "Basilica of Mission
San Carlos de Borromeo" here. pop.
